Marine Growth & Corrosion Removal - Structural Bridge Piles

Overview

IAS group was engaged to provide a safe and efficient diverless solution for removing marine growth and other surface contaminants from rail bridge support piles as  part of an integrity-critical bridge remediation scope.

The campaign was completed with no interruptions to the live rail traffic above the operations in strong tidal conditions with near zero visibility.  Equipment handling was carried out using an IAS Group purpose-built deployment and recovery system.

Scope

The project had the following specifications:

Structure 3 x Rail Bridges
Diameter of Piles 1830mm
Cleaning Pressure < 20,000 psi
Application Type marine growth and surface contamination removal
Operating Environment Splash zone - In air and in water, +2 to -12 metres relative to mean water level.
Surface Preparation Ultra High Pressure Water Jetting to min. WJ2 (water jetting equivalent of SA 2.5)
Quantity of Piles 48

Solution

  • The solution comprised a fully automated cleaning and inspection tool utilizing high pressure water to remove marine growth and other surface contaminants from the piles.
  • The solution was further supported with the ability to subsequently deliver anti-corrosion protection or, fully Engineered and Code Compliant structural composite repairs.

Benefits

  • Safety: Remotely operate system with no divers required
  • Efficiency: fast, consistent and repeatable cleaning process with no down time due to weather, tidal or visibility disruption.
  • Cost: significantly reduced due the removal of cost associated with diving operations.
  • Quality: Consistent high quality surface preparation using only high pressure water.
