Leak Sealing Clamp on Live Steam Line

Overview

A globe valve handling high pressure steam on a process plant had formed a leak, causing damage to surrounding equipment. IC Integrity were engaged to seal the leaking valve, until the next shutdown where it could be replaced.

The client was unable to isolate the valve, but required a solution that had no or at worst minimal effect on production and depressurisation of associated boilers.

Scope

The project had the following specifications:

Structure 11/2" valve
Quantity 1
Design Pressure 5.37 MPa
Fluid Service Steam
Design Temperature 170oC
Application Temperature 170oC
Line Status Operating

Solution

  • Design and fabricate a two piece monolithic block clamp that would completely encapsulate the leaking globe valve and seal against the associated pipe work
  • Install the clamp over the live leak and progressively seal it to control the leak path of the steam to a safe location

Benefits

  • There was no requirement for hot work at any stage of the installation
  • The plant was able to remain operational through the entire clamping procedure
  • Fabrication and design was performed locally ensuring rapid turn around times
  • The entire scope was completed in 4 days from notification of the leak, including all design and fabrication
  • Project completed safely and on time
